By Brittaney Thrasher, Senior at MHS Don't freak out! I promise it will be okay. Yes there are a lot of dates to remember and the new and unfamiliar contests seem to just sneak up on you, but I promise those will be something you'll never forget. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would participate in half of the different activities for FFA. I didn't know a thing about them. Horse judging? Me? I only see them once a year at the rodeo! However, when no one else volunteered and I was thrown over the saddle to become part of the horse judging team, I have never regretted it. Sure I studied the gigantic packet day and night to figure out what exactly constituted as a healthy horse and sure I showed up at the school before the rooster woke up, but it was worth it in the end. I may have placed 10 from last, but the experience of being part of a team and meeting new FFA members from around the state was something you can only experience being in FFA. After that contest, I was roped into nearly all the other events, competitive or not, and had even more fun than before. My advice to you would be to try everything you'd never thought to do. You never know, you may be great at it and the experience you'll gain from every thing you've tried will be worth it all in the end! Good Luck! Senior You

By Mrs. Walker, Student Teacher at MHS Today, I start a shiny new adventure: I take my first step into a high school agriculture classroom to begin my student teaching experience at Monticello High School. Like the students anxious to return for the start of a new school year, I spent last night scratching my head over what to wear, planning my supplies, and trying to think of the perfect first-day-of-school Facebook post. It's so exciting! Perhaps what is most exciting, though, is the potential and the opportunity that comes along with a new school year. I get the chance to dip my toes into my future teaching career. I'll spend the next two semesters alongside an excellent, well-respected teacher. I am going to experience first-hand what it's like to be an FFA Advisor. And I am going to make the most of each and every day! Whether today is the first day of your freshman year or your last first day of high school, take this new year as a chance to grow. Whether you've got the hang of this high school thing by now, or you're nervously uneasy about the daily routine, know this: This year will only be as a GREAT as you choose to make it! So make today GREAT! After all, It's a Great Day to be a Sage! |
